After winding roads through vineyards, hilltop towns steeped in history, truffle-scented meals, and crystalline coastlines, our Istria adventure has come to its final chapter, and there’s no better place to close this sun-soaked story than Rovinj. Nestled on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula, Rovinj feels like it was painted into existence. With its pastel buildings clinging to a peninsula that juts into the Adriatic Sea, narrow cobblestone alleys, and the ever-present hum of cicadas, Rovinj captures the heart effortlessly. It was the final stop on our journey, and as the sun dipped into the sea on our last evening, it felt like Istria was saying goodbye with the most spectacular send-off.
A Brief Look Back: The Story of Rovinj
Rovinj’s roots stretch back to ancient times, when it was known as a settlement of the Illyrian tribe of the Histri. The Romans called it "Arupinium" or "Ruginium," and over the centuries it passed through Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian, and Austrian hands. Each wave of history has left its mark, especially the long reign of the Republic of Venice, which shaped Rovinj into a distinctly Italianate town. Venetian-style bell towers, window shutters, and piazzas whisper stories of merchants and sailors, fishermen and artisans.
Sunset in Rovinj: A Memory for the Soul
We arrived in Rovinj in the late afternoon, just as the golden light began to stretch across the Adriatic. Strolling up the winding streets toward the Church of St. Euphemia, the town’s iconic hilltop centerpiece, we passed local artists sketching seascapes and shopkeepers sweeping doorsteps. From the top, the panoramic view of red rooftops and endless ocean was breathtaking, but nothing could prepare us for the sunset.
We found a spot in one of the cafes in the harbor and watched as the sky exploded into colors: tangerine, deep rose, molten gold. The silhouettes of moored boats rocked gently, and the scent of sea salt mingled with lavender.
What to Do in Rovinj
While many people visit for just a day, Rovinj rewards those who linger. Here are some highlights from our stay:
1. Explore the Old Town
Lose yourself in the labyrinth of stone alleys, where every turn reveals something charming — a hidden courtyard, an ivy-covered doorway, a cat dozing in the sun. The old town is car-free, which makes walking even more delightful.
2. Visit the Church of St. Euphemia
Dominating the skyline, this Baroque church is dedicated to Rovinj’s patron saint. Inside, you can see her sarcophagus and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Climbing the bell tower offers the best view in town.
3. Swim and Sunbathe at Lone Bay
Just a 10-minute walk from the center, Lone Bay is a dreamy beach surrounded by pine forests. The water is incredibly clear, and the rocky coastline is perfect for sunbathing.
4. Cycle through the Golden Cape Forest Park
Also known as Zlatni Rt, this park is ideal for a peaceful morning bike ride or picnic. Shaded paths lead to hidden coves and viewpoints over the sea.
5. Dine by the Water
Rovinj has some of Istria’s finest seafood. One evening, we sat at La Puntulina, perched on a cliffside ledge, and dined on grilled sea bass while the waves crashed below us. Istrian Malvasia wine in hand, we toasted to a trip well spent.
6. Visit the Batana Eco-Museum
This small but insightful museum celebrates Rovinj’s maritime heritage, especially the batana, a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat. You can even book a batana sunset ride followed by a traditional meal at the waterside.
Saying Goodbye to Istria
Istria surprised me. It’s a place where ancient history feels alive, where every meal tells a regional story, and where the landscapes, whether rolling inland hills or sun-drenched shores, take your breath away. From the truffle forests around Motovun, to the lively piazzas of Umag, every stop on this journey offered something distinct yet unmistakably Istrian. It’s a region where Italian, Slavic, and Austro-Hungarian influences dance together in harmony, and where people still greet you with warmth and curiosity. Rovinj was the perfect place to end not just because of its beauty, but because of its soul. It’s the kind of town that invites you to slow down, look around, and remember that life’s greatest joys are often the simplest: a walk through old streets, the sound of waves, a perfect sunset.
So this is goodbye, for now. But something tells me I’ll be back. Maybe even for summer vacation. Because Istria has a way of staying with you, in the taste of olive oil, the scent of rosemary, the lapping of the Adriatic. It’s a place that doesn’t just fill your camera roll, but your spirit. Thank you for following along on this journey. Whether you’re planning your own Istrian adventure or simply armchair-traveling with me, I hope this series brought the magic of this lesser-known Croatian gem to life.
